S.O.A.P. – Journaling the Bible

To be faithful followers of Christ, and to be effective in ministry, each of us needs to develop a lifelong habit of hearing God speak daily through the Bible. We desire to see everyone at LWC experience a dynamic personal relationship with God that can best be gained through listening to the mentors from His Word and applying key lessons that they can teach us.

To begin this adventure you will need only 4 things:

  • Bible
  • Journal (or your choice of technology)
  • Reading Plan (Click here for Life Journal Reading Plan on the YouVersion Bible site/app)
  • A daily planner or extra notebook (to write down all of the tasks you think of when you begin to do your devotion so that you can concentrate on devotions and tend to them later)

Journaling is a major part of LWC’s spiritual self-feeding program using simple devotions.

We use an easy-to-remember acrostic: S.O.A.P.

S = Scripture
Read or listen to the day’s assigned scripture passage from the Reading Plan. Write out the one verse or thought that seems to shine out or speak to you from the page.

O = Observation
Ponder the verse’s meaning and purpose for your life. Write out your observation about what the verse says to you.

A = Application
Write out how you plan to apply what you’ve just observed or learned from the scripture. Ask yourself, “How does this verse apply to me personally?”

P = Prayer
Record a simple prayer asking God to help you apply what you’ve just learned and tell him how thankful you are for His Word becoming active in your life.

It’s not hard to get started, so decide what time will work for you (morning, afternoon, evening, before bed). If you miss one or two days, no problem, just start back on the reading plan and catch up with what you missed if you have time later. It is a decision that will change your life so start today!

“Soaping” can be especially effective and enjoyable with a group. Connect with others and journal through the Bible together!
